One of the most common eye conditions is known as dry eye. As common as it may be, it does not mean that you have to live with it. In fact, living with the symptoms of dry eye can leave you frustrated and uncomfortable. At Eye Doctors of Arizona, we provide evaluation and treatment for dry eye.
The Causes of Dry Eye
Dry eye can have many causes. Typically, dry eye is caused by your tear producing glands not producing enough of the tears you need. Tear production can diminish with age. Autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, or systemic lupus erthymetosis(SLE) may be associated. If your eyes are not properly lubricated, they will feel itchy and uncomfortable, and intermittent blurry vision. In rare severe cases it can result in loss of vision.
Treating Dry Eye
Dry eye treatment typically involves applying warm compresses to help improve quality of tear production and the use of artificial tear eye drops like Systane, Refresh, or Blink to lubricate the eyes. In some cases plugs can be inserted into the tear drainage system to block the drainage of the tears and keep your natural tears. In other cases medications like Xiidra or Restasis can help improve tear production and anti-allergy eyedrops may be need if ocular allergies are a component of irritation. Your eye doctor will assess what kind of medication is going to be the best option based on the cause of your dry eye.
